Als der Porsche 904 im Jahr 1963 erstmals auf Schloß Solitude in Stuttgart vorgestellt wurde, um in der GT Klasse der Sportwagenmeisterschaft zu starten, war zunächst geplant, die von der FIA für eine erfolgreiche Homologation geforderte Mindeststückzahl von 100 Fahrzeugen zu bauen und diese nicht nur als Rennfahrzeug sondern auch mit Straßenzulassung anzubieten, um überhaupt auf diese Stückzahl zu kommen.
